The Application of Hydraulic Cylinders for Hydraulic Presses

Hydraulic presses are used in a wide range of industries to provide different functions from forging, molding, punching, deep drawing and metal forming.  Hydraulic presses generate force by supplying high pressure fluid to a hydraulic cylinder to generate the force required to perform their function. The cylinders in your hydraulic press not only control the force being produced but also the speed at which the press can move and the overall efficiency of the machine. In this blog, we’ll explore the application of cylinders for hydraulic press applications.

Hydraulic Cylinders in applications

The primary type of hydraulic cylinders used today in press applications control the motion by operating as single or double-acting.  Single-acting cylinders use fluid pressure to move the cylinder in one direction and use a spring or smaller secondary cylinder capable of retracting the press whereas double-acting cylinders use fluid pressure to move in both directions.

The basic components of a cylinder are the head and cap, cylinder barrel and piston and cylinder rod assembly. The head and cap are machined to have ports that have been properly sized to achieve laminar hydraulic fluid flow through the ports and prevent cavitation. The piston is attached to a rod to supply the force generated by the internal pressure. A slight force reduction can be observed due to frictional forces created by the moving components and seals. Seal selection should be based on the frictional properties in addition to the speed, temperature and fluid compatibility.

By increasing the diameter of the cylinder piston or the pressure of the fluid, the force output will increase. While the force required for the function is the main requirement of selecting a cylinder, the speed of the press also needs to be taken into consideration. The speed of the cylinder rod is decided by the flow rate of fluid into the cylinder. The fluid fills the cavity behind the piston and moves the piston and rod assembly along the length of the honed tube barrel. When the diameter of the piston is increased, the volume of fluid to fill the cylinder barrel will also need to increase.

If additional flow is not achievable due to limitations of the hydraulic system, this can lead to unfavorable condition in a hydraulic cylinder. Conditions such as cavitation, dieseling and contamination due to a vacuum condition versus pressure on the seals. This will cause shortened cylinder life and affect overall performance.
