42CrMo4/Aisi 4140 is structural steel, strong and hardenable. With this steel one can achieve very good properties on the whole cross-section (while quenching in oil, the max diameter is 70mm, for quenching in water it is 50mm). In the surface hardened condition in achieves a hardness of 54-59 HRC on the surface.
The alloy is primarily used for very heavily loaded medium and large parts with strength requirements exceeding the capabilities of 35HM or 34CrMo4 alloys. It is a good alternative to expensive chrome-nickel and chrome-nickel-molybdenum steels. The main applications are axles, cylinder shafts, crankshafts, connecting rods, larger spindles for machine tools, chain wheels, motor cylinders, ball pins, multi-spline shafts and other machine parts subject to varying bending and torsional loads and wear.
The steel can be gas cut with oxygen after preheating with acetylene-oxy or propane-butane-oxy flame. It is also possible to cut with a plasma jet. The material must be preheated to 300-400 °C before cutting. After cutting cool in air.
